Kaw Thoo Lei closed in August 2011 due to lack of funding. The information below highlights some of the work that the young people carried out to raise the voices of young refugee and asylum seekers.
Kaw Thoo Lei Youth in UK (refugee and Asylum seeker/BME action group)
A group of 10 young people aged from 13 to 17 got together and formed a youth action group called KAW THOO LEI YOUTH IN UK representing themselves and other young refugees in Sheffield. All of them are Karen young people who are from Burma and Thailand.
The group meets every other Wednesday to have fun, learn new skills, discuss issues among themselves. They have conducted peer research about the issues of cultural differences and bullying among young people with similar backgrounds in Sheffield; They have produced their own DVD that will be premiered at the Showroom on the 16th April 2010 and also presented by KTLYUK, along with their own comments and feedback, at the New Arrivals Advisory Group in the Town Hall on the 22nd July 2010. The Advisory Group is a cross party of elected members relating to refugees, asylum seekers EU migrants living in the city.
