Chilypep established and coordinated Sheffield Youth Council from its inception until March 2011. The information below highlights some of their work.
Sheffield Youth Council
Sheffield Youth Council is made up of young people from across the city of Sheffield. We are all from different areas, groups, backgrounds and abilities, but we all have one thing in common – what we believe in!
Aims of Sheffield Youth Council
We aim to bring together young people’s voice, views and opinions to influence political activities and to help change Sheffield to benefit young people.
We represent young people and take their issues into account. We respect and stand up for young people’s rights and especially their right to participate in their communities.
We believe that all young people have the right to have a say in what happens in their city.
We believe that young people have views and ideas about how to make things better and are willing to get involved if they are given the chance.
We believe that every young person has the right to have their say and get involved, and should not be discriminated against no matter what, as long as they don’t take other peoples rights away themselves!
We believe in promoting the positive image of young people!
Some of the members of Youth Council run the Youth Opportunities Fund in Sheffield and we have action groups that look at different issues.
Every year we decide what issues we want the action groups to focus on by asking our members what their priorities are. We also look at findings from consultations with children and young people that have been done in the city.
This year we are focusing the following issues:
| • |
Bullying – so we decided to set up a Anti-Bullying Action Group to work on tackling bullying in Sheffield! Click here for the Anti Bullying Action Group Page |
| • |
Mental and emotional health and wellbeing – so we worked with Right Here to develop a Mental Health Action Group. They got Right Here funding last year so that they can explore issues around Mental Health and wellbeing of young people over the next 4 years!! Click here for the Interchange Right Here Project |
| • |
Homophobia and racism – so we set up GLOBAL (Gay, Lesbian and Others Becoming Active Leaders), a group who aim to tackle homophobia and transphobia and improve the lives of LGBT young people working on issues which are important to them. Click here for GLOBAL
We were also really keen to set up an action group for young people from the Karen community as we were concerned that they were not having their voices heard. The action group for these young people Kaw Thoo Lei has been running now since 2008. Click here for Kaw Thoo Lei |
