Sistahood closed in August 2011 due to lack of funding. The information below highlights some of the work undertaken by the young women.

Sistahood (BME Young Women’s Forum)

Sistahood is a group of 10 young women from BME community aged from 14 to 21 that meet every other Tuesday to bring young women together and discuss issues affecting them and other women from BME communities.

They challenge views about BME women, conduct peer research and hope to deliver train the trainers workshops to adults such as the police to offer them a better understanding of working with young women from BME communities.

Sistahood offers a platform for young women to voice their ideas and opinions to decision makers.

‘The project given us a hope for change and anticipation of being the voice of the BME Women.’

The group have recently written to the Concord leisure centre manager to raise the issue of the unisex changing rooms from a BME women’s perspective, as the change had been made without consultation in the (largely BME) community.

Sistahood have taken part in the following:

Team building Residential activities
Peer research training
Fun
Consultation event
BME health event at Town Hall
Recruitment drive at local colleges
Application for funding
