Soul & Fame

Soul & Fame  is a youth participation project aimed at young people 13- 25 years old with and without learning difficulties and disabilities. The idea originally came from the North Sheffield Youth Forum, who wanted to find a way to include disabled young people in area wide youth parliament. A successful bid to comic relief  for 3 years funding enabled our group to form in August 2006 with our office based at the Burton Street Project, a meeting place was provided by Sheffield Futures at Meynall youth centre and we linked up in partnership with Chilypep.

In the beginning there was one group, SOUL which stands for Speak Out U Listen. A second group, FAME (so called because everyone wanted to be famous) was formed in 2005 to allow more young people to join us to form Soul & Fame. Later we moved to Chilypep’s office at Remington Youth Centre and we are still there now!
Over the years the group has grown into much more than we could have planned for and our achievements include the following:

Representation at UK Youth Parliament
Met David Blunkett MP
Representation at the Area Wide Youth Parliament in North Sheffield
Consultations
Contributing to Sheffield City Council’s policies and strategies
Team Building activities
Applied for funding
Received the Phillip Lawrence award

We have recently received training to develop our own peer research project. The peer research project has enabled other young people with disabilities to speak out and have their say on the every child matters themes. The research results will be presented to Sheffield decision makers at the Showroom on the 16th April 2010. It is hoped that this project will highlight what some of the issues are for these young people and emphasize a need for relevant change.

Should you have any further questions about the groups, please feel free to contact Project Coordinator Harriet Guhirwa on 0114 2403447.
