We have played a central role in supporting young people to influence the Sheffield’s Children and Young People’s Participation Strategy, Sheffield Young Carers Strategy, and the Sheffield Young People’s Mental Health and Emotional Wellbeing Strategy, with our work being highlighted as good practice nationally through the Right Here programme and Big Lottery Youth in Focus programme. Our Managing Director, staff members and young people’s representatives sit on a range of strategic boards and forums, ensuring that Children and Young People’s voice is heard and taken into account.

We have organised local and city-wide conferences and events with and for adults, children and young people, focusing on consultation and participation, and the issues raised by the young people we have worked with. We have presented our work at a range of events both locally and nationally over the years, including most recently at the Right Here Sheffield good practice and learning conference. We support young people to present their work and our models with us, giving their views and experiences of being involved, what they have gained, and why our way of working has worked for them, as well as being able to talk about the issues and priorities of the young people they represent and what they are doing, with our support, to address these. This work helps us to influence both local and national strategies and policy, and promote our learning and models.

Our experience and learning puts us in an excellent position to provide training and consultancy to organisations who want to explore how they can increase children and young people’s participation within their decision making. We can offer one of or blocks of consultation and advice about how organisations can involve young people in their work more, and training and support to take this forward if required.

We have given support, advice, training and resources to organisations and structures who want to improve their involvement and participation practice, including a range of organisations across Sheffield and HealthWatch in Sheffield, Derbyshire, Nottingham, and Derby. We can offer support and advice on how organisations can involve young people in the development of strategic plans, and support young people’s involvement in these if needed, as well as develop their own participation and involvement plans and structures.

We are able to carry out evaluations and assessments for organisations who want to identify levels of participation within their organisation or within a local area, as well as evaluations of specific services and projects for children and young people, looking at how ‘Young People friendly’ a service really is, and how this can be improved. We train young people to carry these out alongside us, using tried and tested tools and techniques that gives them a genuine opportunity to evaluate and assess services from young people’s perspective, and give recommendations that are meaningful to the organisation.
